Illusion. A sea of clouds surges against the wide ridge between the extinct volcano named Mt. Terror and the active Mt. Erebus volcano in the foreground. The small rock on the left was once the scene of a sad tragedy: on 28th of November 1979 an Air New Zealand DC-10 aircraft crashed into the flank of the volcano during bad weather. Unfortunately, all 257 passengers and crew members died. Some parts of the wreckage still stick out of the ice, an eerie reminder that this beautiful place can also be a very dangerous one.
