Mt. Erebus Antarctic expedition 2007 - Image 47 of 58

Difficult escape. The team of five scientists needs about 2 hours to get back out of the cave. Ascending on the 30 m rope with all the equipment is a strenuous task. Especially the last two meters, where temperatures drop towards -35C, are extremely difficult, because all clothes that have been soaked with water inside the cave instantly freeze. Climbing the last lip of ice with stiff and cold hands is the most difficult part, before the vast Antarctic sky opens above the scientists.
