Outpost. Before volcanologists can set up their work camp on the high altitude summit plateau of the volcano, they have to acclimatize for several days in a camp at medium altitude. Otherwise the risk of mountain sickness would be too large for the scientists. Like all field camps in Antarctica, the camp can sometimes be cut off from the outside world for many days. Therefore even small injuries or normally harmless illnesses must be treated carefully. Otherwise they can become very dangerous at such a place. The wall of rock in the background is called Fang Ridge, a long time ago it used to be part of the volcanos crater wall.
