The Antarctic explorer's huts - picture 5

Cape Evans Hut, Ross island, Antarctica.

The boredom of long and dark polar nights combined with the skills of the party's carpenter resulted in a relatively cosy interior of the hut. Although heated by a stove running on seal blubber, everything inside the hut was quickly covered with a thick layer of black soot. The familiar looking ketchup bottle on the shelf had its expiry date sometime around 1916.
